BEECK Ethel Beatrice (nee Wise)

Ethel was born at Cartipo in Burra, South Australia on 17th June 1880.
She was one of 16 children born to John Wise and Susanna Margaret nee White.
John was a second generation Australian, his grandfather Richard having arrived in Adelaide in 1837 from Gravesend, England.
The family were established in Stoke Dameral, Devon. John was listed as a farmer near Hallett, South Australia in 1871.
In 1880 he was a Wesleyan Church Trustee, and was listed in the South Australian Directory in 1883.
From 1907-1910 he served on the Burra Council (West Ward). John and Susanna are buried at Prospect, South Australia.

Ethel came to Katanning to visit her brother and met Johannes ‘John’ Albert Beeck (1877-1961). They were married 24th July 1907 at Katanning and farmed there until 1918 when they moved to their property Glenorchy in Gnowangerup.
Ethel withstood many hardships whilst they were establishing their home.
Their children: Jean Ethel (1908-1970) (m. Ernie Bennett), Hilda Bertrice (1912-1960) (m. Joe Whyatt) and Phebe Esther (1913-1985) (m. Bert Griffiths) Sydney ‘Syd’ Bernard (1918-) (m. Agnes Dusting) and Verdun John (1920) (m. Betty Thompson).
Verdun later farmed Glenorchy and in later years John retired into Gnowangerup town.
Ethel was known to be an energetic and hard working person who was deeply devoted to her family. She died on 15th September 1933 aged 53 following a car accident.
John died on 16th January 1961 and is buried alongside her husband at the Gnowangerup Cemetery. Baptist grave No. 32/33
